Internships

The Chicago Crime Commission's internship program has been an important function of the organization for the past 20 years, providing undergraduate and graduate students with direct experience working in the criminal justice system. Interns gain a firsthand view of the criminal justice system and valuable insight into career opportunities within the criminal justice field. At any given time, the Commission is involved in a variety of projects in which students play an integral role, including:

• Analyzing crime statistics and gathering information for the President and Chief Investigator, for development of reports and presentations;
• Researching and writing articles for the Action Alert newsletter;
• Assisting the executive vice president in fundraising, event planning and community network projects;
• Attending meetings and seminars sponsored by the Commission, other criminal justice agencies, the media and government;
• Managing the "Report Crime in Your Neighborhood" 24-hour anonymous hotline, including taking crime calls and reporting them to police;
• Conducting Internet searches on gambling, financial fraud, and other illegal activities;
• Assisting in archiving and digitizing original/historical documents;

In addition to gaining worthwhile and varied experiences doing criminal justice research, our interns have unique opportunities to tour select criminal justice agencies, including the Cook County Jail, Chicago Police Department Headquarters and Crime Lab, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Cook County Criminal Courts, and the Metropolitan Correctional Center, and participate in a ride-along with the Chicago Police.

The Chicago Crime Commission serves the greater Chicago area as a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization combating crime. Internships are unpaid, and usually are elligible for credit hours (arranged through a college or university).
